The University of Pittsburgh
Medical Center (UPMC), one of the largest integrated healthcare delivery
networks in the US, announced a partnership with tech giant Microsoft to collaborate on the
design of three "digitally-based specialty hospitals." The hospitals
will focus on innovative treatments for cancer, heart diseases,
transplantation, diseases of aging, vision restoration, and rehabilitation.
Digital hospitals seek greater efficiency and lower costs through
the integration of connected devices and other technologies.
Microsoft is
likely hoping these partnerships will open up new opportunities in digital
health. Digital health is having a profound effect on healthcare, and
the opportunity for cost saving and improved efficiency for providers is
propelling spending. For 2017, digital health funding is projected to reach $7
billion, up from $6.4 billion in 2016, according to Accenture.
